Mud, Drizzle and Development: Finchley U8s Go Unbeaten at Middlesex festival

U8`s brimming with confidence after a morning of clear progression

Every player contributed meaningfully to the team’s performance and development

Under leaden skies, with drizzle hanging stubbornly in the air and muddy pitches cutting up underfoot, Finchley Rugby Club’s Under-8s delivered a superb display of enthusiasm, resilience and development at the Rosslyn Park RFC Middlesex Rugby Festival, emerging from five matches unbeaten and brimming with confidence after a morning of clear progression.

Facing strong opposition in Kensington Tigers, Hammersmith & Fulham, Old Grammarians, Enfield Ignatians and Ealing Trailfinders, Finchley drew two and won three, but the results only told part of the story. The real success lay in how rapidly the young side evolved across the festival, with their support running and passing improving markedly from game to game despite the testing conditions.

With matches played six-a-side and all nine squad members rotating evenly — three substitutes entering each half — every player contributed meaningfully to the team’s performance and development, showing admirable determination on a slick and increasingly muddy surface.

From the outset, Victor H set the tone with remarkable maturity. His tackling was consistently assured in the slippery conditions, and his growing willingness to offload in contact demonstrated both awareness and organisation beyond his years, helping Finchley maintain attacking momentum.

Caspar proved one of the standout runners of the day. Early games saw him powering through tackles, but as the tournament progressed his development as a distributor became increasingly evident. By the later matches, he was regularly lifting his head to find supporting runners, bringing teammates into play with growing confidence.

K.P. enjoyed a breakthrough festival. Once he realised just how hard and fast, he could run — and that his concentration could last an entire game — he became a constant attacking threat, scoring a hatful of tries with electrifying bursts through heavy ground.

George combined superb running lines with tireless support play, repeatedly appearing at the right moment to continue attacks. His first-up tackling was equally impressive, especially on a greasy pitch where defensive commitment was vital.

Victor G grew visibly in confidence throughout the day. Fully engaged from start to finish, he increasingly backed himself with ball in hand, taking on defenders and contributing positively in attack.

Arthur delivered consistency in every fixture, quietly excelling through intelligent positioning. Almost always in the right place, he provided structure and balance, ensuring Finchley remained organised in both attack and defence.

Aiden was a quieter presence but no less effective — a genuine hidden threat. After a couple of well-timed choccie bars boosted energy levels, he produced explosive bursts of running and committed tackling, showing tremendous endeavour in difficult conditions.

Henry emerged as one of the revelations of the festival. Frequently perfectly positioned, he combined determined tackling with strong running, repeatedly influencing play across the pitch.

Perhaps the most striking transformation came from Oscar. Initially unsure in the opening game, he grew in confidence with every match and by the final fixture was fully immersed, involved in almost every phase and contributing across the field.

By the end of a damp and muddy festival, Finchley’s Under-8s had not only secured an unbeaten record but, more importantly, demonstrated resilience, teamwork and a love of rugby — improving with every whistle and leaving Rosslyn Park proud representatives of their club.
