Phoenix Bow Out in Junior National Cup Quarter Final

Phoenix Bow Out in Junior National Cup Quarter Final

George Loureda3 Mar - 17:16

Junior National Cup – Quarter Final - Richmond 2s 44 – 0 Finchley Phoenix

This fixture proved to be a tough test for a young and developing Finchley Phoenix side.

Sunday 1st March

Despite the scoreline, both the Richmond coach and supporters were generous in their praise, describing Phoenix as one of the most challenging opponents they have faced this season in both league and cup competition.

Richmond opened the scoring after 7 minutes when Monique Adedeji crossed on the left wing to make it 5–0. Finchley worked hard to respond but faced an experienced Richmond side capable of applying the same sustained pressure that has troubled teams throughout their league campaign.

On 16 minutes, a well-worked backs move saw Charlotte D’Halluin score to the right of the posts, extending the lead to 10–0. Amanda Neivens added Richmond’s third try on 23 minutes (15–0), and although the initial conversion was missed, Sam Hart added the extras shortly after to make it 17–0.

From the restart, Finchley attempted to gain territory, but a kick failed to find its mark, and on 28 minutes, Amber Perry-Jordan capitalised to score Richmond’s fourth try (22–0). Phoenix began to show glimpses of their attacking quality, led admirably by Back of the Match Layla Campbell, but unfortunately the final pass continued to elude them.

Jay Badland-Shaw added a fifth try on 32 minutes to take the score to 27–0 at half-time.

Phoenix started the second half brightly and showed some encouraging attacking touches. However, a lapse in concentration allowed Amber Perry-Jordan to break through the middle on 46 minutes. Hannah Kent converted to make it 34–0.

Finchley’s brave defensive effort, led by Forward of the Match Eliane Estienne, continued to hold firm for much of the half. Richmond added further scores through Monique Adedeji on 55 minutes (39–0), before she completed her hat-trick under the posts on 66 minutes to conclude a Player of the Match performance for the home side. The conversion attempt struck the upright, leaving the final score at 44–0.

The commendable Phoenix defence worked tirelessly to prevent any further scoring.

Richmond 2s now progress to the semi-final, while Finchley can hold their heads high and turn their focus to the league campaign, where the goal remains clear — pushing for the title and securing promotion.
