Oliver Ashberry performance last Friday night wasn’t just a big moment for him — it was a brilliant moment for Finchley Rugby Club.
Having joined Finchley at just five years old, Oliver has come all the way through the club’s outstanding minis and youth section. From early Sunday mornings in the minis to stepping into senior rugby, his journey represents exactly what the club is about.
This season he has enjoyed a strong year with the Colts and has now made two appearances for the senior second team. He first featured on the wing a few weeks ago, but it was last Friday that truly marked his arrival.
Starting at fly-half — one of the most influential positions on the pitch — Oliver delivered an outstanding performance against a strong Quintin side and was deservedly named Man of the Match.
There were a few natural nerves beforehand, but once the game started he settled quickly and embraced the responsibility. To be trusted at fly-half in a big fixture says a lot, and he handled it superbly.
What makes it even more special is the context. Our first and second teams are packed with players who have come through the minis and youth pathway. Seeing Oliver now join that group is a powerful sign of what Finchley is all about — developing young players, giving them opportunities, and watching them step confidently into senior rugby.
When asked what advice he would give to those coming through the Colts, his message was simple:
“Take your opportunities, come to senior training and try to get as many games as possible.”
From five-year-old mini to senior Man of the Match — a fantastic achievement and a proud moment for Oliver and for the whole club.
