In our second HML league fixture of the season we faced a team we had not played before - Biggleswade RFC - with bright sunshine and a cool day being perfect conditions for rugby.
The first half started well for Finchley with tries to Fintan & Finn. However, the team then took their foot off the pedal - perhaps thinking it was going to be easy - which allowed a fine free running Biggleswade team to get back into the game. Slick hands and putting players into space allowed the visitors to quickly score two tries of their own. The half ended 10-10.
I don't know what coaches Aidan & Luke put in the water at half-time because it certainly did the trick. Finchley were more organised, especially in the forwards which created more time and space for the backs. A solid scrum and some very good counter-rucking put Biggleswade under pressure which eventually paid off in turnover ball.
With the forward platform providing the backs with clean ball, quick passing down the line soon saw Fintan score again. This prompted Biggleswade to put us under some strong pressure which resulted in them scoring a fine try with a lovely break through a gap by one of their backs.
Finchley did not let their heads drop though and were soon charging upfield again with Ben scoring a great try down the wing. Knock ons over the line prevented both Jasper and Christian getting on the score sheet after very strong attacking play and it was the pace of Ben again on the wing that really sealed the game, scoring two more tries in quick succession to notch up his hat trick in only his third ever "proper" rugby match.
By this time Biggleswade were tiring and Finchley were relentless with Jasper, Finn and Archie all being rewarded for strong running and support of their teammates with tries to round off the match. the final result was Finchley 45 - Biggleswade 15.
It was a good game of rugby with improvement continuing to be shown from a number of players. There is still more to work on with our tackling, organisation and positioning but these were minor details after such a strong win on such a beautiful day. Well done to the squad.
