This game was a pleasure to watch from a Finchley perspective with some good flowing rugby played throughout the afternoon leading to Finchley’s biggest win of the season so far.
The game got off to a good start for the home side with Alex Goring making a good break down the blind side and chip ahead for Lewin to gather up, unfortunately Lewin was just forced out into touch short of the line.
This close call only delayed the wingers first try of the afternoon which was scored when Mousley made good break from the back of the scrum and fed Lewin and the winger showed great strength and evasion to finish the try from 40 yards out. 7-0
This was followed up with another score form close range by McCarthy, conversion missed. 12-0.
Following this the away team came back into the game and were rewarded with a penalty for their efforts which was slotted. 12-3.
This once again kick started the home team into action and the men in red and grey dominated the remainder of the half, with Mousley in particular running some great lines from the kick off. With good runs being made by the three quarters and back three this led to 2 more scores for Finchley, one of which was finished very well by Finchley no. 8 Mousley.
Half time: 24-3
With the bonus point secured by half time the home side could have been accused of letting their foot off the gas slightly, with attacking plays not being executed and some tackles missed.
With 20 minutes remaining the Finchley boys came to life again and were able to score 3 more tries. The first was scored by Earl from short range after a great passage of play which saw Chris Onyilogwu, Lewin and Sam Thomas make a great break through the heart of the Wasps defence. The 2nd was scored from a Finchley scrum 5 yards out, an area that Finchley dominated all afternoon.
The Final try of the game was scored by Mousley after some great play down the wing by Kelly, Tufft and Eaton. This rounded off a good afternoon for the home team with some pleasing performances being made by all involved.
Final score: 43-3
Next week sees the Finchley boys travel to Datchworth who are just below Finch in the table. If Finchley are to keep in the hunt with the league leaders this is a must win.
